HISTORY

Our Story

Our congregation originated from Methodist  ministers of the Paw Paw Circuit, in the Frederick District of the Baltimore Conference. They often arrived on horseback, holding services in area homes of the once thriving town named Okonoko. In the late 1800s, the majority of this area was occupied by family farms.

The land where the church stands, was part of a 143 acre tract granted by Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, to Captain John Greensfield, and eventually became known as the Portmess Family Grave Yard. Edward J Portmess and his wife Rena B. Portmess donated the land, in exchange for $1.00, on 12/5/1895. Their son, George Portmess, helped construct the building that you see today. The bell arrived in 1920 by train at Little Cacapon and was transported in a wagon with an especially made bed to accommodate it's weight. It is still rung every Sunday.

A solid foundation in the Holy Word of God, love, and kindness is ours to share. We open our arms and hearts to new members and visitors. We strive to make you a part of our special family by sharing Christ's word in action and deed.
